Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is Colorado State University’s policy on carrying weapons on campus?
CSU does not have a written policy on carrying concealed handguns on campus.  CSU follows Colorado law, which states that individuals carrying concealed weapons must have a concealed weapons permit issued by a Colorado sheriff in accordance with Colorado Revised Statute 18-12-206.  Please see our weapons brochure for more information on carrying handguns on campus.

Q. Can I keep my weapon in the residence halls or CSU apartment as long as I don’t carry it on campus?
Weapons of any kind are not allowed in CSU residence halls or apartments.  This includes BB guns, pellet guns, paintball guns, air soft guns, large knives, nunchucks, metal stars, swords, or other exotic weapons.

Q. What are CSU's emergency notification methods?
The CSU Police Department (CSUPD) is a full service professional law enforcement agency that is trained and equipped to respond to emergencies.  We employ a number of redundant systems that will help us to get messages out to our community as quickly as possible.  The following are some of the communication systems that we currently have in place:

  • Rave Alert (text-based messaging system) - Text alerts can be sent to CSU community members notifying them of an emergency.

  • Reverse 911 - This allows us to call all or specific land-based phones in a targeted area.

  • CSU Emergency Telephone Network - Allows us to make conference calls to areas on campus and alert people to an emergency.

  • Email - Allows us to notify thousands of people quickly.

  • Emergency Broadcast System - Allows us to interrupt cable and broadcast stations with an emergency notification.

  • CSU Police 911 Center - All calls, including cellular emergencies, are dispatched from our center.

Q. What is the jurisdiction of the CSU Police Department?
The jurisdiction of the Colorado State University Police Department is not limited to the boundaries of the campus.  The CSU Police Department has full law enforcement authority on property owned or controlled by EITHER Colorado State University or the State of Colorado.  This means that CSU police officers can enforce the law within their jurisdiction on property owned by CSU and on other state properties.  In addition, CSU police officers possess peace-officer commissions and are certified officers of the City of Fort Collins.  CSU police officers are authorized to enforce state laws and city ordinances within the city of Fort Collins.  Moreover, all CSU police officers are sworn deputies with the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.  This means that CSU police officers can enforce state laws and county ordinances anywhere within Larimer County.

Q. Why did I get a ticket for not stopping at a stop sign on my bike?
Every person riding a bicycle is required to obey the same applicable traffic regulations as the driver of an automobile, including those set aside specifically for bicycles.  Skateboarders are also required to obey all traffic control devices specific to this campus.

Q. Does my bike have to be registered?
All bicycles operated or parked on the Colorado State campus must be registered with the CSU Police Department (CSUPD).  Exceptions will be made for bicyclists who are visitors to campus.  A registration decal, known as a CSU Bicycle (or Bike) License, will be provided for a fee and will remain valid for as long as the bike is in possession of the registered owner.
